The Big Picture

Dear ELT Colleagues:

The ELT Initiative continues to grow in Massachusetts, and national momentum is building as well. This year, the number of ELT schools in Massachusetts nearly doubled from ten schools enrolling 4,700 students last year, to 18 schools enrolling over 9,000 students this year. And nearly 75 schools are planning for potential conversion over the next two years.  The state’s investment in Expanded Learning Time doubled from $6.5 million to $13 million.

ELT Budget News
We need your help to ensure that legislators know how important ELT is to students, teachers and parents as the House faces key decisions about funding. If you have not already done so, please contact your legislator to express support for ELT funding. This will be particularly important on Thursday, April 17 and Friday, April 18. If you have questions about the budget process, please contact Blair Brown, Massachusetts 2020 Associate Director of Public Policy, at blair@mass2020.org or 617-378-3921.

Principal Spotlight

In each issue of the ELTimes, we will interview an ELT principal to get a candid analysis of the
particular challenges and the rewards of creating “a new day for kids”.

Carol Learned-Miller is the Principal of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School in Cambridge, MA.

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School has a wonderfully international and diverse community. One of the most interesting things about the school is that many of our teachers have been here since the school opened more than 30 years ago. It is really special that many of these master teachers have become the driving force behind the ELT initiative.

Promising Partners

This section features a community partner who is participating in the Expanded Learning Time Initiative.

The YMCA of Central Massachusetts and Worcester ELT Schools

With three schools currently implementing ELT and three others hoping of moving forward with ELT in Fall 2008, Worcester is among the trail-blazing communities leading the Expanded Learning Time Initiative in Massachusetts. The Worcester ELT schools all consider community partnerships to be an integral part of their redesign plans and are collaborating with other organizations to provide programming that was not possible with the shorter day. Currently, the Worcester Art Museum, the Massachusetts Audubon Society, Clark University and the YMCA are collaborating with the schools to enhance teaching and learning throughout the school day and year.

Union Matters

This section highlights the work that Massachusetts 2020 is doing to engage union leaders in all communities across the state to participate in the ELT planning process.

Collaboration Vital for ELT: Teachers Unions, Superintendents, Teachers, and Principals

The successful collaboration demonstrated through the Massachusetts ELT Initiative has created an important new model of forward-thinking, problem-solving teachers unions partnering with district management to improve schools. There are 15 local teachers unions that have negotiated successful ELT agreements with their school districts and, by embracing expanded time, these unions are on the forefront of transforming schools.

Massachusetts 2020 is able to provide technical assistance support to schools and districts participating in the Expanded Learning Time Initiative because of the generous support of a growing network of funders including the Amelia Peabody Foundation, The Boston Foundation, the Nellie Mae Education Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Yawkey Foundation II, an Anonymous Foundation, and the Gabrieli Family Foundation.
We thank them for their partnership.
