Step 2: Building a Preliminary Plan Based on Prioritized Needs

Once the planning team has completed a thorough needs assessment and determined its core priorities, the next step is to craft a preliminary plan for the redesigned day. As a first step, review the ESE Implementation Proposal Requirements to understand the key questions your plan will need to address. To complete the plan, your team will need to make the following key decisions:

  1. Based on core priorities and your school-wide academic focus, consider how your school will take advantage of additional time in the core academics, enrichment classes and programs, and teacher time including collaborative planning time and professional development. How much time will you add in each area? What will the time be used for?
  2. Consider the new start and end times for the school day and any changes to the school calendar. What combination of longer days and/or longer school year makes the most sense for your school based on your priorities and other key factors such as transportation, staffing, finances, existing extracurricular activities and parent support?
  3. Begin to design sample student schedules showing how the redesigned day might look under ELT. See sample Student Schedules
  4. Consider how community-based partners could support your ELT goals and become involved in the expanded school day. See Forging Partnerships section.
  5. Consider how you will staff the redesigned school day. Will teachers work the entire time? If not, what additional staff or partners will be needed for ELT?
