Step 2: Finalizing Schedules for the New School Day

While schedules will continue to change and evolve up to and through the start of ELT, it will help considerably to develop a final schedule for students and teachers three months before school begins. Finalizing the schedule will help clarify whether or not any additional hiring is needed and how many of the existing teachers will be needed to staff the additional time (if all teachers are not working). The final schedule can also be used to clarify any changes that may be needed, such as modifications to classrooms and other facilities to accommodate new programs, changes to the bell schedule to accommodate new start and end times, and any new procedures that may be needed to ensure smooth transitions between classes and activities.

Some specific questions schools will want to consider include:

  • How will students be assigned to any new classes or electives?  How large will these classes be?
  • If students will have a choice of electives, what will be the process for them to select or prioritize particular courses?
  • When will specific partners offer programs and which students will participate in those programs? What kind of enrollment process is needed if any?
  • Where will additional classes take place? Will teachers have to share rooms?
  • If the school will be offering breakfast or snack time for the first time, when and where will these meals take place and how will they be supervised? Are any additional arrangements needed to secure these food services?
